Robert Pattinson recalls airport employee asking why he quit acting after Twilight: ‘I’m Batman’

Just because he doesn’t sparkle in the sun anymore doesn’t mean Robert Pattinson has ceased to exist.

Unfortunately, not everyone has received the memo. The Mickey 17 star recently told The New York Times that he learned this for himself while taking a trip to St. Vincent and the Grenadines with his fiancée Suki Waterhouse, where he was stopped at passport control by an immigration officer who recognized him

“Hey, you’re the guy from Twilight,” Pattinson recalled her saying. “Why’d you stop acting?” 

The actor wasn’t sure how to correct her mistake: “I was like… ‘I’m Batman?'” In response, he said, “She just laughed.”

Though Pattinson rose to fame for his role as Edward Cullen in the YA vampire franchise, he has remained quite busy since the story concluded with 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2. And to the immigration officer’s credit, Pattinson said he didn’t expect to be successful for so long.

“Not in a million years did I think I’d still be doing this when I got my first job,” he admitted. “I can’t believe this is still going.”

Following the mainstream success of Twilight, Pattinson initially pivoted away from franchises, working on independent films and pairing with auteur directors. He earned acclaim for roles in David Cronenberg‘s thriller Cosmopolis, the Safdie brothers’ crime drama Good Time, Claire Denis‘ sci-fi film High Life, Robert Eggers‘ psychological horror The Lighthouse, and Christopher Nolan‘s twisty spy epic Tenet. Then, as he tried to inform the airport employee, he starred as the titular hero of Matt Reeves The Batman.

The 2022 film is slated for a sequel and purportedly part of a trilogy, with the next installment scheduled to hit theaters in 2026. 

“I could genuinely be retiring by the end of them,” Pattinson joked.

For his portrayal of the Caped Crusader, Pattinson abandoned the usual Bruce Wayne playboy persona, opting for a more off-kilter, emo version of the character when out of his bat suit.

“That was my one idea for Bruce,” Pattinson explained. “He’s been portrayed until now as a playboy. But what if he’s completely socially inept and kind of agoraphobic?”

The actor echoed this sentiment when discussing the film with Entertainment Weekly ahead of its debut, sharing that he liked the idea of Bruce not being in total control of his anti-hero persona.

“It made more sense with the grieving process if he hasn’t gotten over being the 10-year-old boy who, in his mind, let his parents die,” he said. “What he feels is himself, he thinks is an incredibly weak and vulnerable child, and he needs to have an entirely different alter ego to survive himself, let alone fight all the criminals of Gotham.”

Pattinson is next due on the big screen when Bong Joon Ho‘s Mickey 17 arrives in theaters on April 18, 2025.
