Jennifer Tilly‘s marriage didn’t work out, but at least the divorce has served her well.
The Dec. 3 episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills saw the series newcomer and Oscar nominee offer some insight into her 1991 divorce — and the lasting impact that it had on her life.
“It takes a really long time to get over a divorce,” the Chucky actress said in a confessional, after the Housewives took a moment to unpack their respective separations from former spouses. “My ex-husband was Sam Simon, who [co-created] The Simpsons.”
She explained, “I was married to him for seven years. We were together for about 10 years, and then when we got divorced, I got a piece of The Simpsons in the divorce settlement. Nobody knew that The Simpsons was going to go on for trillions of years!”
With a laugh, she added, “Honestly, every day, I’m like, ‘Thank you Sam!'”
Tilly, who divorced Simon in 1991, previously spoke about the royalties on Los Angeles Magazine‘s The Originals podcast, where she said that her residuals amounted to around one-third of Simon’s ongoing earnings from the show. That nugget of info may come as a surprise to some, but at least one of Tilly’s RHOBH costars was quick to clock her massive wealth.
The eagle-eyed fashionista in question was Erika Jayne, who called attention to the actress’ $33,000 Louis Vuitton boat purse.
“What Jennifer’s holding, that looks like a boat, isn’t. It’s actually art,” Jayne observed. “And it’s actually very pricey. She has very unique pieces. And I know, because I’m looking at them. And I’m coveting my neighbor’s goods. I’m like, ‘goddamn it.'”

Along with fellow co-creators Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, Simon played a crucial role in populating the fictional town of Springfield and developing The Simpsons‘ unique tone and sense of humor. He ultimately departed the show in 1993, four seasons in, over creative differences with Groening — but retained his title as executive producer and received royalties as the show entered syndication, gaining profits from VHS and DVD sales.
Despite their divorce, Tilly remained close with Simon until his death in 2015, after a short battle with colon cancer.
Apart from the settlement, Tilly has amassed her own wealth as a beloved character actress, known for starring in the Wachowskis helmed thriller Bound and Woody Allen-helmed comedy, Bullets Over Broadway. The latter role earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Tilly is however best recognized for her portrayal of serial killer Tiffany Valentine in 1998’s Bride of Chucky, and has since reprised the role in additional franchise entires: Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky, and the TV series Chucky, which was canceled in September after three seasons.
The actress has also made a name for herself as a professional poker player with her total earnings from winning tournaments, as of 2019, exceeding $1 million.

As for her RHOBH career, Tilly previously appeared on the show as a friend of Sutton Stracke, but this season marks her first as an official cast member. Ahead of the season premiere, the Oscar nominee revealed that she is a longtime “superfan” of the show and was excited to see “Beverly Hills through the lens of really rich people.”
But she soon discovered that the Real Housewives glamour wasn’t all it was cracked up to be.

“I thought that I was going to see a lot of people shopping on Rodeo Drive, but a lot of the filming that they do is in the Valley, in places where it’s easier to get permits,” the actress shared. “So it’s not like you’re at the fanciest places in Beverly Hills, arguing. They’re usually arguing at some kind of non–Beverly Hills place because the really fancy, elite places don’t want Housewives screaming at each other in their dining room.”
