The 2025 Sundance Film Festival Gala will present the annual Vanguard Awards and honor Michelle Satter, Founding Senior Director of Artist Programs at Sundance Institute.
The Vanguard Award for Fiction will be given to Sean Wang for writing and directing “Dìdi (弟弟).” The Vanguard Award for Nonfiction will go to Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie, co-directors of “Sugarcane.” The gala will take place on Jan. 24 at the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley in Park City, Utah.
Satter has worked with Robert Redford, founder of the Sundance Institute, for over 40 years. The institute said she is being recognized for “her longstanding commitment to nurturing artists and cultivating independent film through the Sundance Labs.”
“Championing independent artists through the Sundance Institute has been the driving force of my career,” Satter said. “I’m passionately invested in this work because I believe that art and storytelling can truly reshape the world, sparking empathy, bridging humanity, and fostering understanding for global audiences, all while engaging and inspiring them.”

Wang first gained recognition for his short film “Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó,” which was nominated for the short film documentary Oscar. This year, his coming of age film “Didi”, which follows a young Taiwanese American boy, won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival. “For over a decade, Sundance has been my north star, symbolizing artistic excellence and bold, distinct voices,” said Wang.
Co-directors Brave NoiseCat and Kassie won the U.S. Documentary Directing Award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. “Sundance gave us and our film a place to learn and grow through the generosity of mentors, peers, and fellow artists. We will never forget that special afternoon at the Library Center Theatre when the room went dark and we held hands — and our breath — with anticipation,” said the two in a statement.
