Miley Cyrus’ Golden Globes Updo Is the Epitome of Rockstar Chic

If there’s one thing that Hannah Montana taught me, it’s that hair is a powerful tool for reinvention. Miley Cyrus herself knows that all too well. We all remember where we were when Cyrus revealed her rebellious pixie buzzcut in 2013. And who can forget her giant ’70s-inspired blowout for the 2024 Grammy Awards? Tonight at the 2025 Golden Globes, Cyrus, nominated for Best Original Song for her track in The Last Showgirl, went through yet another reinvention.

This time around, she channeled rockstar chic with a messy bun, complete with contrasting highlights and blunt bangs. Striking the perfect balance between chaotic and polished, Miley’s hair evoked ’90s Pamela Anderson with a grunge twist. The pop star’s statement updo was the perfect way to tie together her effortlessly edgy look, which featured a plunging custom Celine gown with sparkling cutouts. The cherry on top? Her trusty pair of Celine sunglasses.

From head to toe, Cyrus’ look is the epitome of chic, I-woke-up-like-this confidence. Her longtime hairstylist, Bob Recine, told Byrdie that the inspiration behind the hair was “a cross between Debbie Harry and Japanese cartoon characters.” In essence: Edgy, but not not trying too hard. “We wanted something that was up with this dress but not ‘done’ looking,” he adds. “She wanted to feel cool and chic—no jewelry, just sunglasses, and really exuding confidence.”

To get the look, Recine started with the Nexxus Prep and Protect Heat Defense Spray, applying it on damp hair before blow drying it with a flat bristle brush. He followed it up with the Nexxus Epic Shine Anti-Humidity Spray for a glossy shine. Then, he twisted her hair up with pins, picking out some strands “so it wasn’t too done-looking.” To seal in the look, Recine applied the Nexxus XXL Volume Medium Hold Hairspray and topped it off with the Nexxus Repair and Nourish Ultra Lightweight Hair Oil.

As for glam, Cyrus didn’t hold back on the drama, opting for an Amy Winehouse-esque smokey cat eye paired with a glossy peach lip. “To finish it all before she walked the carpet, I added a good amount of XXL Volume Medium Hold Hairspray to keep my sexy messy confidence together so it will last the night,” says Recine.
