Guidance on Lunar New Year break issued for students in Ho Chi Minh City

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has provided guidelines for a break during the upcoming 2025 Lunar New Year holiday.

Schools in Ho Chi Minh City are asked to reasonably address cases in which students wish to have more days off for the Tet celebration in their hometown.

The Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, is the biggest festival of the year for Vietnamese.

In late November 2024, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh ratified a nine-day break for the Tet celebration, spanning from January 25 to February 2.

As per its guidance document, the municipal education department extended the break to 11 days from January 23 to February 2 for K-12 schools.

The municipal department tasked these schools with proactively mapping out a detailed plan to ensure students can grasp sufficient lessons and take enough tests before and after the holiday.

The principals of schools were asked to create favorable conditions and reasonably handle all problems for non-resident students so that they can fully enjoy a Tet break.

Ho Tan Minh, chief of the office of the municipal department, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on December 13 that the extended break was designed to allow students to participate in a traditional pre-Tet festival for tending graves with their families.

For students accompanying their parents back to their hometowns for the Tet celebration and wishing for additional days off, principals have the flexibility to accommodate them.

However, Minh emphasized that students must ensure they do not miss any lessons or tests.
