Let there be lightness in your outfits this season!
There are two types of people in the world: those who abide by seasonal dressing rules and those who choose to be free. At this time of year, baby blue is the perfect colour for the latter camp.
Sure, it may not be as safe as the universally flattering black. It’s not as overtly romantic or festive as red. It’s certainly not as trendy as Pantone’s “mocha mousse” colour of the year (which is basically zhuzhed-up brown, but I digress). Baby blue, however, is the ideal winter colour, and I’m here to tell you why.
When days get shorter, temps drop lower and going outside feels like a losing game, baby blue is a source of sartorial hope. Its light, airy quality feels easily approachable and comforting, while its child-like pastel finish gives it a playful, experimental edge.
It’s not hard to see why navy is the most palatable hue of the season. To its credit, its subdued tone taps into our desire to mellow out, hibernate and retreat from reality. But baby blue encourages us to find cheer in the frigid times of year. (Rhyme intended.) It urges us to hold onto our joie de vivre, even when we’re trudging through grey slush. While colour analysts will tell you baby blue is a summer shade, those who dress with their gut know it thrives against the backdrop of all-things icy, rainy and snowy. Recent designer collections appear to agree.
The Fall 2024 runways were unexpectedly rich with the soft shade. At David Koma and Bottega Veneta (above), models were swathed in icy outerwear. Chloé offered its frothy boho looks in blue, while Prada paired baby hues with darker tones to strike a contemporary contrast. Gucci offered boxy coats (below) while Blumarine introduced icy one-pieces.
If the thought of bundling yourself in periwinkle pieces during dark days elicits seasonal confusion, know that styling it doesn’t have to be so obvious. The smallest pops of pale blue can make the biggest outfit difference. Tie a scarf around your waist for an unconventional torso accessory. Swap your sheer stockings for opaque pastel tights and feel the thrill of going against hosiery norms. Or delve into different sides of the shade by sporting a blue bag paired with a tonal frock. At its best, baby blue can break up the monotony of dim dressing and add a dose of character.
It may not have the cultural cachet of Brat chartreuse or Barbie pink, but its sartorial subtlety makes it perfect in this age of over-saturated hues. Baby blue unlocks a world of whimsy that’s often shelved away as we fuss about things like age-appropriate outfits and accepted seasonal palettes. Why does winter have to be so dark and dreary? With baby blue as your go-to colour, it shan’t.
